The Band Toto Asia
Toto expanded its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. The company saw North America as a growth market for Washlet's bidets and toilets, in contrast to its "base" markets of Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words so that the next generation could read them. Many words were substituted with foreign ones. For example, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.
Origins
The company was founded in 1917 and its early years were a mirror of Japan's economic growth. In the first half of its existence, the company manufactured products to meet the demands of modern, contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kilns in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding overseas in the late 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other manufacturers' products to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the firm's global market share.
By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development of household appliances that use water. It also improved its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and increase profits. The company used the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management and sales program. This led to a higher degree of customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent on the toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example is equipped with a strong tornado flush that is more environmentally green than traditional toilets. The company also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green procurement policy. Toto also manufactures bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than standard models.
The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto's most famous products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made from ceramics), the history of plumbing and products such as bath units. Before beginning the formation of Toto members of the group did sessions for a variety of musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich as well as guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather as well as drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name as evocative as Asia you'd expect the group to be prog queens and kings however, it's actually a fairly simple rock group. The group began as a quartet and recorded two albums - 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest hit was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its share of problems. Record companies put the band on place with the directive "give us a hit record or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on them to meet the deadline. Luckily for Toto they delivered and they did it with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album opens with a strong and pounding sound, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. But the album also contains some more mellow, jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and sounds totally wrong, but works amazingly well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was as well more refined, more precise and less akin to previous efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the group embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. The album also contained a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that affected his singing abilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
